Quiet down! Government targets Grand Canyon noise
The Associated Press
— Two federal agencies want to quiet things down at the Grand Canyon. The National Park Service and the Federal Aviation Administration are working on proposals that would lessen aircraft noise over the park. Last year the FAA recorded 56000 air tours over the Grand Canyon. The total number of tour and transportation flights below 18000 feet could be reduced depending on which parts of a half-dozen proposals are enacted. ne suggested change: giving air-tour operators financial incentives or more flight time for incorporating “quiet” technology. In all the proposals could reduce noise over the canyon by a total of 10 percent to 15 percent with greater or lesser changes in some backcountry areas.

District Judge Alvin K. Hellerstein set the trial date over the complaints of aviation security industry lawyers who said they needed more time to prepare. “There’s a great deal of shock on the defense side” said Desmond Thomas Barry a lawyer representing the aviation defendants. It has not been decided which of three remaining wrongful death claims will go before the jury at the trial. More than 90 families have already settled their claims and do not need trials.

ne thing Boston has that the Berkshires don’t? The Skywalk bservatory at the Prudential Center where visitors pay almost $15 to take an elevator and snap a picture of the city from one of its highest vantage points. Here in western Massachusetts we don’t have a Skywalk bservatory. We have something better: Shamrock Aviation a company based at Harriman-West Airport in North Adams offers scenic tours of northern Berkshire County as well as introductory flight Advertisement yld_mgr. place_ad_here(“adPosBox”); lessons for aspiring pilots. Starting at $30 per person the flights are a bit pricier than a Skywalk ticket but understandably so. Cruising high above the rolling hills that have made Berkshire County famous Shamrock manager pilot and instructor Matt Champney takes guests on 20- to 30-minute tours overlooking Williamstown North Adams Adams Mount Greylock Williams College and Massachusetts College of Liberal Arts among other places. According to Champney who obtained both his pilot’s and instructor’s licenses from Bridgewater State College the scenic flights accommodate up to three guests at a time with prices increasing from $30 as the number of guests decreases.
