_Each large passenger jet — such as the Airbus A330 — is struck by lightning about once every three years on average according to international aviation incident statistics. _Regional aircraft are hit about once a year because they cruise at much lower altitudes where there’s a greater possibility of strikes. _With approximately 25000 commercial jets in service with the world’s airlines there are statistically about three dozen lightning strikes occur each day. _The overwhelming majority of such incidents ends with no damage or only superficial damage to the airframe such as small dents.

CACI to assist Navy with combat aviation training

will continue assisting the Navy with aviation combat training under a $30 million contract. Under the contract the company will furnish management technical data analysis and information technology services to the Chief of Naval Air Training CACI officials said today. ne of the objectives is to help the agency refine and improve the way it collects and analyzes information. The support effort covers the entire process used by the Navy to manage aviation training for its officer and enlisted personnel the officials said. The award is a key part of CACI?s knowledge management business the officials said.

Chamber of Commerce’s 8th Annual Aviation Summit on April 29 that he is open to discussions to include aviation in the bama Administration’s proposal to create a multibillion-dollar transportation infrastructure bank but claimed that he had not been approached with the idea. Less than 24 hours later in a speech before a joint luncheon of the Washington Aero Club and New York City’s Wings Club LaHood modified that statement saying he expects the White House to “rally some dollars” in response to a request from airline industry officials for assistance in equipping their aircraft with NextGen avionics. The request came after a meeting with bama economic advisor Lawrence Summers.

Aviation experts are debating whether lightning or turbulence may have caused Air France Flight 447 an Airbus A330 with 228 passengers and crew aboard to crash into the Atlantic cean early on Monday. [ID:nL1719357] Brazil’s air force said on Tuesday that its planes have sighted wreckage 400 miles (650 km) off its northern coast that could be part of the missing airliner. [nN02494080] Two veteran pilots interviewed by Reuters said they would take pains to avoid flying into storms even though modern aircraft are designed to withstand them. "My personal record was a diversion of almost 300 nautical miles just to circumnavigate a large area of showers over the western Atlantic cean near Florida" said Evert van Zwol president of the Dutch pilots’ association VNV. The A330 flying from Rio de Janeiro to Paris encountered heavy turbulence about four hours after takeoff and around 15 minutes later sent an automatic message reporting electrical faults.
