(AP) – A Cold War spy plane with three tail fins and a hump on the fuselage needs a new home. And that home could be in regon. The retired EC-121 flew to Montana 28 years ago for use in aviation maintenance classes but it has mostly stood idle next to a hangar at the University of Montana’s Helena College of Technology. The college no longer wants the old Air Force plane preferring to free its parking space for a campus construction project. Parties interested in acquiring the plane include regon’s Evergreen Air & Space Museum. The curator of the museum says it wants to fly the EC-121 to Arizona where the plane would be restored and then flown to regon for permanent exhibition in McMinnville. The curator Stewart Bailey says it would take four to six months to make the plane airworthy and the restoration could take a few years.

?All these things raise questions: Are they an aberration or are FAA (Federal Aviation Administration) standards sufficient? r are the standards not enforced?? said Dorgan chairman of the Senate Commerce Science and Transportation subcommittee on aviation to The AP. The senator is right to be concerned and to plan to hold hearings on the issue. nce the hearings are completed Congress shouldn?t hesitate to act. Aviation isn?t the first industry to wrestle with life-or-death tasks being performed by people who?ve gotten too little sleep. Fatigue is a perennial issue in the truck driving industry for example.

(AP) – A student born with only one hand has been recognized as the top pilot at the University of klahoma. Eric Gaffney was honored last month with the Department of Aviation’s Stick and Rudder Award which is presented each year to the student who demonstrates “the most readiness for flight. Gaffney whose father is an American Airlines mechanic initially feared he wouldn’t get medical clearance to fly professionally. He sought a degree in biochemistry before switching majors. He was able to get medical exemptions removed by showing he could fly solo operate cockpit controls from both seats and operate manual wing flap systems. The Broken Arrow native says flying with only one hand doubles his workload and makes him work a little faster and a little harder.
