The air power demonstration will serve as a stimulating source of entertainment education and inspiration focused on the men women and machines that are a significant part of our community’s past present and future. Tarrant County’s history sports long chapters about this area’s involvement in the development of aviation. It’s a legacy of which native Texans and recent residents can be proud. It’s a story that needs to be told to every newcomer. Saturday’s air power demonstration will serve as a witness to our children and grandchildren of what can happen when patriotism inspires people to excel.

City officials who anticipated the decision will likely file an appeal with the FAA’s associate administrator for policy who must make a final ruling by July 8. If the City loses as is widely expected it can then file an appeal in federal court. Thursday’s decision came six days after a federal appeals court on Friday upheld a legal order obtained by the FAA blocking the City from enacting a 2008 ordinance that bans C and D aircraft with approach speeds of between 139 and 191 mph. FAA officials have said the law which the City Council adopted a year ago is unnecessary illegally discriminates against aircraft types and harms jet operators.

All five passengers on board and the pilot were killed. The plane had just left the airport and crashed into the yard of a home near the airport. “The plane plummeted when it made a turn towards the left’ said the head of the Civil Aviation ffice Juan Jose Carlos. He added that they still do not know if it was an engine failure or a pilot error. The plane was reported to be bound for Belize but indications are that there were no Belizeans on board. We have confirmed with Aero-Dispatch Services at the airport that they were expecting the plane to arrive this afternoon but that is about all they know. And in another item of note from Guatemala President Alavaro Colom is under tremendous domestic pressure tonight as he is being accused of murder.

But these precautions are meaningless when aircraft are not operated by well-trained alert disciplined and experienced pilots. Evidence brought before the National Transportation Safety Board this week raises alarming questions about whether senior flight crews on commercial flights — especially on commuter routes —are competent adequately trained and sufficiently well rested to meet their safety responsibilities. The linchpin for all aviation safety is the "pilot-in-command" concept. He or she is the "final authority" in operating an aircraft "from the moment an aircraft first moves under its own power for the purpose of taking off until the moment it comes to rest at the end of a flight.
