Plane crashes in ocean off Santa Barbara
The Associated Press
(AP) — Authorities say a pilot is missing after his small plane crashed into the ocean off the Santa Barbara coast. Federal Aviation Administration spokesman Ian Gregor says in a statement that the single engine Extra EA300 disappeared off radar Sunday evening. A Santa Barbara County Sheriff Department helicopter crew later found debris and an oil slick about two miles offshore. The plane is registered to a Santa Barbara company called tter Enterprises but no phone listing for that company could be found. A sheriff’s dispatcher says Coast Guard crews are assisting in the search for the pilot the only person believed to have been aboard the plane when it crashed. The crash is under investigation by the FAA and the National Transportation Safety Board.

Leading this charge is one of the best organizations I’ve ever joined aviation related or not APA – Aircraft wners and Pilots Association. For years I’ve been displaying a banner on one of my airport websites that says “GA Serving America” which was an APA program. That’s morphed in to this new and larger program best described by APA themselves: General aviation is being threatened by public pressure onerous security measures and the possibility of user fees. It’s time we take a united stand to inform policymakers the media and the public of the value of GA.

Neighbors fume over LAX plan to redesign runways

The solution at the airport with four parallel runways nestled against the Pacific cean is straightforward according to federal aviation regulators and reports by safety experts. They say runways on the north side of the airport should be moved farther apart. That plan has infuriated the airport’s neighbors who cite concerns over pollution noise and decimation of businesses. As accidents at airports have become a larger share of commercial plane crashes federal regulators are increasingly pushing for safer airport designs that minimize chances of ground collisions and crashes off the ends of runways. But as the clash in Los Angeles exemplifies it’s not always easy for airports to get approval for changes even when they are designed to make critical safety improvements.
