KS Lawmakers Want DHS to Work with Aviation Industry

Kansas lawmakers want to make it better for the industry. Senator Brownback Senator Roberts and Congressman Tiahrt say the Department of Homeland Security (DHS) should work closely with the aviation industry before it making new regulations in the industry. Brownback says he hopes to meet with TSA soon to discuss how the economy already impacts the industry. He goes on to say “it would be beneficial for both the general aviation industry and the TSA to work together to develop a plan to ensure that every American is safe on board a plane but that does not unnecessarily harm the general aviation industry. ” Senator Roberts says “The government must recognize that commercial aviation security practices will not fit the general aviation model. ” Congressman Tiahrt says the aviation industry has been hit hard with the economic downturn.

Corporate Jets Sitting ut This Year’s Super Bowl

Starting late last year the use of corporate jets dropped sharply as companies eliminated or curtailed flight departments and as individuals cut back on charter flights. After several years of record sales of new aircraft the business jet industry now is deeply worried about a glut of used jets on the market. a business aviation research company there were 22. 8 percent fewer departures from domestic airports of corporate aircraft — including business jets and turbo props — than in December 2007. During the fall companies “were looking very closely at all of their expenses the corporate flight department just being one of them” said Joe Moeggenberg the president of Aviation Research Group.

Bolen Honored With Aviation Industry Leader of the Year Award

The National Business Aviation Association (NBAA) announces that NBAA President and CE Ed Bolen received the Aviation Industry Leader of the Year Award. This award recognizes dedication to the aviation industry and is presented each year by the Kiddie Hawk Air Academy. Affiliated with the Airport Journals family of publications the Kiddie Hawk academy is a Colorado nonprofit dedicated both to honoring individuals who have made significant contributions in aviation and to fostering youth interest in aviation careers. Bolen was honored yesterday evening as a part of the academy’s “Living Legends of Aviation” ceremony. Presenting the award to Bolen was last year’s honoree Pete Bunce president of the General Aviation Manufacturers Association.

Aviation museum founders named Port Townsend Citizens of Year

The Thuottes were visibly touched by the honor holding back tears. The Thuottes co-founders of Port Townsend Aero Museum at Jefferson County International Airport worked for the past year rallying donors and in-kind donations from contractors to erect the museum featuring antique and experimental aircraft and a classroom where youths learn about airplane repair and earn their pilots licenses. Port Townsend City Councilwoman Laurie Medlicott 2002 Citizen of the Year who introduced the nominees and presented the Thuottes with the award joked that they were “not fly-by-night folks” but were instead seriously dedicated to educating youths about aviation. Peggy Thuotte is active with the Association of Flight Attendants employee assistance program and has been the Hangar Condominium Association treasurer at the airport since 2001. She is a retired United Airlines flight attendant. Jerry Thuotte works with the Experimental Aircraft Association Jefferson County Pilots Association the Antique Airplane Association and Airline Pilots Association. He is retired as a United Airlines pilot.
