But Air Line Pilots Association safety committee chairman Rory Kay said the pilot’s message could easily have meant that the jetliner had ingested birds in both engines or that it had been struck by more than just two birds. “It’s not easy to count birds” Kay noted wryly when you’re taking off or landing and typical speeds can exceed 100 miles per hour. Federal Aviation Administration spokeswoman Diane Spitaliere said “Bird strikes do happen from time to time. “She said there haven’t been many major accidents due to birds strikes “not in many years — not like this one.

It’s not something you look forward to every time you take off from any place you had to think fast and you had to work fast and you had to keep focused on what you were doing. “The main thing about it is that we’re blessed that all these people were able to get out of the airplane” he said. “No matter what we call it it was probably one of the greatest days in commercial aviation in a very very long time. Tilmon is philosophical about the problem of birds hitting plane engines. “The air belongs to the birds the birds were there first” he said. “We just borrow a little piece of it from time to time. and the pilot was able to warn passengers to brace for impact. The cause of Thursday’s accident is under investigation but the plane may have been disabled by a collision with birds. Alison Duquette a spokeswoman for the Federal Aviation Administration credited the pilots and three flight attendants for their “fast work” and added: “All I can say is that the emergency training done by the pilots and flight attendants and the emergency evacuation procedures seemed to have worked. “Corey Caldwell a spokeswoman for the Association of Flight Attendants which is a union said the typical lack of interest among passengers in the safety demo is “frustrating” adding that when passengers pay attention they’re more prepared on what to do. Most passengers have probably heard the safety drill enough times to know that life vests should not be inflated inside the aircraft. They are bulky and could impair your ability to exit. Photos and video of Thursday’s evacuation showed some passengers donning the yellow vests after they emerged from the aircraft; others appeared not be wearing them.

Aviation industry looks to cut emissions
guardian.co.uk UK
uk Friday 16 January 2009 02. 22 GMT The aviation industry has become increasingly conscious of the growing demand to address environmental concerns as well as its own fuel costs. Industry experts reckon that emission levels are falling by about 2% a year as older aircraft are replaced by newer more fuel-efficient planes. The Advisory Council for Aerospace Research in Europe has set the industry three main targets for 2020. Using emissions from a large aircraft in 2000 as a benchmark the ACARE is looking for a 50% reduction in carbon dioxide emissions per passenger kilometre an 80% cut in oxides of nitrogen (Nox) and a 50% reduction in noise. Engine improvements are expected to contribute between 15% and 20% of C2 reductions air frame improvements ? using for example lighter materials such as carbon composites ? another 20% to 25% and a further 5% to 10% is expected to come from better air traffic management.
