Joliet-crashed craft built for speed
Joliet Herald News IL
The last accident near the airport involved an amateur-built craft that crashed in ctober 2004 killing the pilot. The term “amateur-built” might raise eyebrows but the planes have roughly the same safety record as commercially built general aviation craft said a spokesman for the Experimental Aircraft Association. The accident rate for amateur-built planes is “a little worse than cars but better than motorcycles” said David Berkley with EAA. Amateur-built or hand-crafter airplanes are regulated and certified for flight Berkley said. And they have become a growing part of general aviation aircraft at the same time that the accident rate for that category has been declining he said. “Amateur-built aircraft now makes up a fifth of the general aviation built aircraft that is out there” he said.

John Cox the former executive air safety chairman for the Air Line Pilots Association the union that represents Continental Airlines pilots said it is not unusual to face an unanticipated gust as a pilot. “There are times that you get hit with a gust that is stronger than you expect” Cox said. But he stressed weather is one factor being looked at in Flight 1404′s crash and the 737 is one of the sturdiest airplanes used in commercial aviation. “I flew that airplane for 15 years” said Cox now an aviation safety consultant. “It is one of the best cross-wind airplanes in the fleet. ‘Very technical questions’A spokeswoman for Continental Airlines declined to answer questions about how its pilots are trained to deal with wind gusts.
