EU welcomes Indonesia’s new aviation law

18 (Xinhua) — The European Union on Thursday welcomed the adoption of a new Indonesian aviation law which introduces stricter safety regulations on Indonesian airliners. EU has banned 51 Indonesian airliners including leading carrier Garuda from entering its territory since July 6 last year following a series of air accidents that had claimed more than 300 lives. “The European Commission congratulates the Indonesian authorities on the passing of the aviation law” the EU said in a statement obtained here on Thursday. “It is a significant development for the improvement of air safety in Indonesia. ” Indonesian Transport Minister Jusman Syafii Djamal said the law passed on Wednesday by the parliament complied with all elements requested by the International Civil Aviation Organizations.

An earlier report had said the plane took off from somewhere in Ohio. The aircraft went down early Thursday on a golf course northeast of Louisville. Jimmy Stewart to be inducted into aviation hall

EST Dec 18 2008 DAYTON: The National Aviation Hall of Fame says Jimmy Stewart the late Hollywood actor and bomber pilot during World War II will be among its new inductees. Officials at the hall in Dayton said today that others to be inducted in July will include the late Edward White an astronaut in the Gemini and Apollo programs; Eileen Collins the first woman to command the space shuttle; and Russell Meyer Jr. former head of Cessna Aircraft Co. The hall also will present its annual ”Spirit of Flight” Award to the Apollo astronaut crews for their role in enabling man to walk on the moon and return safely to Earth. The hall was founded in 1962 in Dayton hometown of the Wright brothers and was later chartered by Congress.
