Zimbabwe.News.Net Zimbabwe
NetSaturday 13th December 2008Both the chairman and president of China Eastern Airlines have been replaced by the government. Ma Xulun deputy general manager of China National Aviation the state-owned parent of flag-carrier Air China has been named president of China Eastern replacing Cao Jianxiong. The moves are widely seen as part of an industry shake-up by the Chinese government which has been disappointed by China Eastern?s performance. Earlier this year a deal to sell a stake in China Eastern to Singapore Airlines fell through while a competing plan to sell shares to China National Aviation Holdings also failed. The airline has also been hampered by swings in currency values and oil prices amid weakening passenger and freight demand.

“It’s unfortunate but it’s part of the deal. It’s a complicated operation. The city shut down streets around the tower and workers had to coordinate with the Federal Aviation Administration and other agencies. Some spectators even gathered to watch the lift which was expected to take about four hours. They’ll try again today but if the winds persist the installation could be put off until January because the remaining weekend days of the year are filled with other projects Weiss said.

Good Opportunities In Aviation? It’s A Tough Sell

According to FAA statistics quoted by the Courant there has been a 27 percent increase in student pilot starts over the past five years. It should be noted that for whatever reason that increase has been limited to the Eastern United States. Nationwide the number of pilots fell three percent over the same period suggesting a trend that would not be matched by any expansion of the aviation industry.
