Michael Robert “Bob” Baas could fly an airplane before he could drive a car. For nearly 60 years of his life, he seemed to be flying a plane or studying aviation history. He hunted submarines from the sky for the Navy, before beginning a 35-year career with American Airlines, retiring as a Lockheed L-1011 captain. When he wasn’t flying, he was a volunteer for the Smithsonian National Air & Space Museum in Washington, D. , and the Frontiers of Flight Museum in Dallas.

SFO selected for test of runway safety program

The Federal Aviation Administration said Wednesday that SFO was selected as one of 21 airports because its among the nation’s busiest and has runways that intersect. As part of the project, airplanes will be fitted with satellite tracking devices that will let pilots see their location on the airfield and where other planes and service vehicles are in relation to it. Pilots currently depend on what they can see from the cockpit and air traffic controllers. European agency demands checks on DC-9s, MD-80s

The Cologne, Germany-based European Aviation Safety Agency says the directive is based on information from Spanish officials into what caused a SpanAir passenger jet to crash upon takeoff on Aug. That crash in Madrid killed 154 people. In its directive Wednesday, the agency calls the check a “precautionary measure.

Public invited to learn about aviation at ‘Airport Day’

Nov 15 inside and outside the Airport Administration Building. The event gives the public the opportunity to learn about the various careers, opportunities and services aviation has to offer. Aircraft clubs, flight schools, consultants, pilots, mechanics and airport vendors will be participating. Additional activities include a performance by the Fort Pierce Central High School Marching Band, a display of old, new and unusual aircraft and free airplane rides to youngsters ages 8 to 17 provided by the Young Eagles Chapter of the Experimental Aircraft Association. Airport Day is free; however, donations will be accepted to benefit CASTLE.
