When she first heard about Aviation High School, an 83-year-old school housed in an L-shaped beige-and-green Art Deco building in Long Island City, Ham was drawn to it. “I wanted to come because I thought flying would be a good career,” she says. Each year the school’s name seduces many New York City eighth graders who come upon it, printed in bold, in the Directory of New York City Public HighSchools, and dream of a life of flight.

Not a few are in the dark over what the N19. 5 billion Intervention Fund was used for. Some are sincere while some are mischief about the whole issue and those who are expected to speak are keeping mum. The Senate Committee on Aviation has been meeting with the stakeholders in the ministry and the agencies, asking questions on who did what and most especially why two of the agencies, the Federal Airport Authority of Nigeria (FAAN) and the Nigerian Airspace Management Agency (NAMA) are in cold war over repayment of loan secured at the Zenith Bank and the attendant problems.

Approximately $434 million of the authority’s outstanding revenue bonds are secured by net revenues of the airport system, with the remaining $183 million secured by a first lien on PFC revenues and a back-up pledge of airport system net revenues. The Rating Outlook for all bonds is Stable. The series 2008 bonds consist of four series, the 2008A (AMT) and 2008B (non-AMT) bonds which are scheduled for negotiated sale during the week of April 14 and the 2008C (AMT) and 2008D (non-AMT) refunding bonds which are scheduled for negotiated sale during the week of April 28.

THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: Island Aviation Services, the official airline of the Maldives, has handed over its ground handling services at the Thiruvananthapuram International Airport to a Chennai-based private firm. This, according to aviation sources, is in violation of the guidelines laid down for this by the Ministry of Civil Aviation and can create security problems. Now Air India security carries out baggage screening of the passengers in the daily flights of Island Aviation Services from Thiruvananthapuram to Male. Liquids in carry-on baggage are already prohibited on domestic flights as of last month. “According to aviation safety needs, passengers are banned from carrying lighters and matches on civil aircraft,” the aviation administration said in a statement. “Civil Aviation authorities remind passengers to properly handle related items on their own to avoid the resulting flight delays and impact on tourists,” the statement said.
