Mega Airports bring fresh security challenges, Aviation Summit is told
Al-Bawaba – Apr 6, 2008
Ahmad Al Haddabi, VP, Safety Programme and Airports Security for Abu Dhabi Airports Company, said a national aviation security master plan is being put in place in the UAE as aviation authorities face up to new threats which are emerging as the industry undergoes enormous expansion. “New airports, especially the mega airports planned, require a new security approach,” Al Haddabi said at the Aviation Security Middle East conference, held as part of the Airport Show, the biggest airport event of its kind in the world this year, which concluded today (Wednesday). “Previously, you only had to consider the airside and the aircraft operations, but now you have a whole airport city to secure. As airports expand rapidly they require faster aircraft turnaround to cope with higher passenger numbers and increased air cargo traffic.

It is possible that a person could be known as an aviator, but not with the knowledge and ability of piloting the affairs of a conglomerated aviation outfit such as (FAAN)". The turnover of managing directors in FAAN at a ratio of one in six month or at most, another official said, is a proof that there is a deliberate attempt by this cabal to deliberately mismanage the industry because "most of the MD’s are not just competent enough to head a section in a ministry or in a well organised airline as their appointments are based on personal interest". He also revealed that the blank cheque which the Nigerian aviation authority signed and sent to virgin Nigeria to enable them operate exclusively from the international terminal of the MMIA was not issued under duress. "Those behind it the same bureaucratically driven public officers who enticed the unsuspecting political officer holders (ministers) who are non-professionals into assenting to such initiative. "As soon as it backfired, they resorted to their normal way of dodging responsibility by passing the blame to one another, a lesson Mr. Felix Hyat should have learnt earlier rather than appologising to Nigerians after misinforming them on the missing aircraft. It all boils down to the incompetent public officers working in tandem with the mafias constituting the aviation cable"… It all boils down to the incompetent public officers working in tandem with the mafias constituting the aviation cable". A top officials with FAAN from the northern part of the country said when the former aviation minister, Isa Iguda now governor of Bauchi state could no longer contain such the alarming rate of criminality and indiscipline in the nation’s airports, he employed the services of a consultancy firm which came up with stunning revelations and solutions. "He secured the president’s approval to sanitize the aviation industry. But as soon as his request was granted by former president Obasanjo to form a tacks force to embark on the cleansing of the industry, the mafia cabal plotted for his removal with a flimsy excuse that heards of cattles were found crossing the Port Harcourt airport run way when Air France was about landing". He further noted that Borishade became Iguda’s successor as minister despite oppositions from prominent Nigerians and the senate "as Obasanjo stood his ground in total defiance to the yearnings of Nigerians", adding that "this Marked the beginning of serial devastating blood shed which claimed the lives of Nigerians like the late sultan of Sokoto, two sitting senators and a governor". Another staff of the aviation security and safety in FAAN recalled that with the emergence of Fani Kayode as the minister of aviation, this mafia labal conspired to hatch a plan which led to the sack of the then director of aviation security and safety, captain Balarabe Usman, who professor Borishade was honest enough to describe as a seasoned professional. "He was a very uncompromising officer when it came to security and safety at the nation’s airports.
