It handles nearly half of the passenger traffic between North America and Europe. It connects the City of London to the rest of the world. It is the fortress that guards the lucrative transatlantic business of British Airways (BA). In anticipation of this month’s start of the “open skies” agreement between America and the European Union, other airlines are queuing up to fly from it too.

08 1800EDT: An ANN News-Spy called our attention Saturdayafternoon to the Transport Canada CADORS incident report onFriday’s downing of a Piper PA-46 in Alberta, Canada, that shedsnew light on the unfortunate accident. According to that report, a controller in Edmonton observed theaircraft moving erratically as it flew on course to Winnipeg. Whenthat controller made contact with the aircraft, the pilot reporteda problem with a gyro. Soon after, the aircraft was observed in a rapid descent, andthe controller lost contact with the aircraft. The incident report identifies the aircraft as a PA-46-350P, aJetprop-converted Malibu, fitted with a Pratt & Whitney CanadaPT-6 turboprop.
